Azerbaijan Denounces Iranian Missile Incursion into Turkish Airspace

(MENAFN) Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry on Monday “strongly condemned” the firing of a ballistic missile from Iran that entered Turkish airspace.

In its statement, the ministry expressed solidarity with “brotherly” Türkiye and reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for the country’s security and territorial integrity.

According to reports, the ballistic projectile launched from Iran was intercepted and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense units stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry emphasized that the country continues to respond firmly to any potential threats and is closely monitoring regional developments.

This is not the first such incident this month. On March 4, a missile from Iran toward Turkish airspace was intercepted by NATO forces, with debris later found in southern Hatay province. Days later, on March 9, another Iranian missile entered Turkish airspace and was similarly neutralized, with fragments landing in southeastern Gaziantep province. No casualties were reported in either case.

The situation in the region has been tense since late February, when US and Israeli airstrikes targeted Iran, resulting in the deaths of over 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since retaliated with drone and missile attacks aimed at Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military personnel, causing casualties, damage to infrastructure, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
