UN-Habitat Urges Global Participation in World Urban Forum

(MENAFN) The United Nations’ World Urban Forum will convene in May in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing together stakeholders from local governments, academia, business, and civil society to explore sustainable urban development, according to reports.

Anaclaudia Rossbach, executive director of UN-Habitat, said the 13th session of the forum (WUF13) will take place from May 17-22. Organized in partnership with the Azerbaijani government, the event aims to address the pressing challenges of sustainable urbanization.

Speaking ahead of WUF13, Rossbach highlighted the forum’s agenda and schedule. She explained that the event traces its origins to a United Nations General Assembly resolution, with the first forum held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2002. Since then, it has been hosted every two years in various cities worldwide. “It brings the global urban community together to exchange ideas and best practices, and to build a critical mass around the importance of urbanization and its impacts,” she said.

Rossbach noted that close collaboration with the host country has been ongoing and pointed out that the previous forum drew around 25,000 participants, with expectations of an equal or larger turnout in Baku. She emphasized that WUF is not an intergovernmental negotiation but rather a platform for stakeholders to engage and interact under the UN-Habitat umbrella.
