Azerbaijan Calls in Russia Envoy Over Lawmaker's Karabakh Remarks
The Foreign Ministry revealed that Mikhail Yevdokimov received a direct summons and was handed an official diplomatic protest concerning remarks by Konstantin Zatulin, a parliamentarian from the dominant United Russia Party.
Baku sharply denounced Zatulin's "long-standing statements" against the country's "sovereignty and territorial integrity," as well as what it described as his "open support for separatism."
Officials also slammed his efforts to "distort court decisions" and his use of "unacceptable expressions" regarding Armenian citizens convicted of crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes.
The government asserted these offenses occurred "as a result of Armenia's military aggression against the Republic of Azerbaijan."
Azerbaijan urged Moscow to implement "appropriate measures" to halt what authorities characterized as the "destructive activities" of individuals attempting to damage "peace and stability in the region" and Azerbaijan-Russia relations.
Zatulin, speaking Thursday through the International Russian-Armenian "Lazarevsky Club," branded the Baku rulings a "reprisal" and a "sham trial."
The lawmaker alleged the penalties attacked the "right to self-determination" of Armenians in Karabakh and called for freeing those he termed "illegally detained" in Azerbaijani prisons.
His statement additionally attacked Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, charging the administration with "betrayal" and inaction.
Azerbaijani authorities have consistently dismissed such accusations, maintaining their legal proceedings follow "in accordance with national legislation and international law."
